Royal Geographical Society - Grants available (Sept 2007)

1. The Ralph Brown Expedition Award

The grant is a single annual award worth £15,000, offered to the leader of an expedition working in a marine environment. This includes the study of inland or coastal wetlands, rivers or shallow (less than 200m) marine environments. The project should be of value to the host country and where possible to the local community. The team should include nationals of the host country and the project should involve at least 4-6 weeks in the field.  

Eligibility: Researchers.

Applicants must be fellows or members of the RGS-IBG. The grant is open to applicants from any nation.

2. Thesiger-Oman International Fellowships  

By the kind generosity of the His Majesty Qaboos bin Said Al Said, Sultan of Oman, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) offers two annual Fellowships up to £8,000 for geographical research in the Middle East and other arid regions of the world as a memorial to Sir Wilfred Thesiger. One grant is awarded for research on the physical aspects of the desert environment and the second for the human dimension of arid and semi arid environments.  

Eligibility: Researchers with at least 3 years experience at postgraduate level or above.

Applicants must be affiliated to a higher education institution. This can be anywhere in the world.

 3. Ray Y. Gildea Jr Award  

The Ray Y. Gildea Jr Award supports innovation in teaching and learning in both higher and secondary education. The single grant of £2,750 is awarded annually. Applications can be made for projects to research, develop and/or pilot innovations in teaching and learning in any field of geography in higher or secondary education. The outcomes of the grant should be able to be shown to be of direct benefit to students of geography.  

Eligibility: Teaching at the secondary and higher education level
